#03 – Cabaret – 20/04/01

Poster by John Minton

Fri 20th April 8pm at The New Trinity Community Centre, Old Market, Bristol. £7/6 (further door reductions for those who dress with greatness or with magnificence)

A night of easy-listening noir, cabaret toilet poetry, orchestras and choirs, dance, installation art, and projections, with dancing to finish. This one’s practically a festival!

The event will be in three sections:
Part 1. A Cabaret featuring mainly lots of bands playing fairly acoustically but also involving some dance acts and maybe a bit of poetry.

Part 2 : Two more rocked up bands for the full psychedelic band experience. These being Mooz and They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them).

Part 3 : A chance for the audience to get more involved with the possibility of dancing while not having to watch anything in particular. The Twonk Sound System present ‘easy listening verses fucked-up noise’ – dj’s and art terrorists working against perfect harmony. See below for details.

PART 1 :CABARET

1. Dan Ashton
2. Bill Carghill
3. MorningStarSmallOrchestra present part of their latest work ‘a symphony of fools’
4. London Toy Orchestra : live edutainment with the sound of plastic tooting.
5. Patrick Duff : the man from Moon and Stranglove plays a short set with his highly acclaimed and beautiful new small combo. Songs of Blood with High Folk and some intimations of the Gothic.
6. a possible appearance from The Keepers of the fire mixed voice choir

PART 2 : TWO COOL BANDS
7. Mooz : Coveted local girls done well present a new set of songsculpture in this their first gig of the year.

8. They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them) : who are the musical group beyond the description that could be. But think chaos, kraut rock and Faust and you’ll be getting there – even if you don’t know what that is.

PART 3 : A DANCEFLOOR ODDYSEA
presented by the Twonk Soundsystem (dj’s from They Came from the Stars + Molotov Organisation) : easy listening vs. fucked up noise inna twostyle soundclash – 1 hour, 3 decks, 1 microphone, 4 very different dj’s and a bunch of toys. (ffi goto http://www.molotov.org.uk)

#02 – Rock N Roll – Fri 23rd February 2001

The Greatness Of The Magnificence#2

Fri 23rd February 8pm at The New Trinity Community Centre, Old Market, Bristol. £5/6 (further door reductions for those who dress with greatness or with magnificence)

A night of rock’n’roll, easy-listening noir, cabaret poetry orchestras and choirs, dance, installation art, and projections, with a disco to finish.

THE MUSIC

1. The Balkanized :

Eastern European accordion and bass trio set the flavour of the evening.

2. Chikinki :

…and then the flavour has a massive rush of adrenaline when these fine rock’n’roll Electro-groove merchants take the spectral stage. Chikinki’s performance is part of their UK your which comes with the release of their LP ‘Experiment With Mother’ (released on Sink and Stove records).

3. MorningStar Small Orchestra:

The heavenly multitude present a psychedelic set from the sublime to the craven. This is the year MorningStar’s long awaited second LP (with Paris label Microbe records) will be released, probably April (and the next Greatness of the Magnificence)

4. Rita Lynch :

And her shiny new band with a hellhound on their trail play their first concert, having spent a week in the studio working on Rita’s next LP. This gig also celebrates the release of a CD collection of Rita Lynch live and previously unreleased songs on the Colours and Sounds label which will be available.

COMPERE: the great Paul Bradley and his amazing sounds introducing the acts and being one.(an event highlight was Paul ranting about how he used to be in the band before introducing Rita Lynch)

BogArt will be providing Spontaneous Art Spaces.

PROJECTIONS: via Sid Fossil

DJs: MDF, Ranger and David Hopkinson on the wheels for the dancing.

ADDITIONAL MUSIC: from The Sacred Harp choir

#01 – Easy Listening Noir – 23 november 2000

The first Gothmag event took place at The Trinity Centre in Old Market Bristol. I set up a sound system above the toilets, placing the speakers over subtle holes in the ceiling in the Gents and Ladies. It looped a tape of poetry all night long.

Designed by Lady Lucy

Lady Lucy designed the logo which was later made into t-shirts.
I made a cd with booklet featuring a poem/ lyrics from all the bands.

Performers were:

Gravenhurst
The Blessing
The Solar Mumuns
Morningstar
Don Mandarin

with DJs Gypsy Sun Cross and Lady Lucy

The Greatness Of The Magnificence

This series of events was created in 2000 by Jesse d Vernon and a heavenly host of helpers. The idea is that any creative idea is possible, regardless of resources so let’s aim for the highest in quality, good taste, LoL subtlty, irony etc and the result can’t fail to be The Greatness Of The Magnificence (even if it’s also quite rubbish).

Here’s a quote from a song by The Moonflowers called The World’s Most Famous Unknown People which illustrates the concept quite nicely:

“The Worlds most famous Unknown People
In these progressively backward times
Carelessly precious with dreams that are real
More brilliantly crap than anything else”
